David Bowen

David Bowen is editor of Net Profit, a non-technical London-based newsletter designed to explain the commercial implications of the Internet to senior managers. Net Profit was founded in late 1996, and has established a strong reputation for the quality of its analysis. Its associate editor is Hamish McRae, the economic commentator and futurologist, and it is backed by a number of well-known City of London Figures. Net Profit Publications also has a research and consultancy arm, and publishes books and reports on Internet-related business.

David Bowen has been a business journalist and commentator for 20 years. He started and edited a Euromoney journal in the early Eighties, then worked as a feature writer for Business magazine before becoming industrial editor of the Independent on Sunday in 1989. His first book, "Shaking the Iron Universe - British manufacturing in the Eighties" was a finalist for a major book award. He was named industrial journalist of the year by the Industrial Society in 1993 and 1996.

In his seven years at the Independent on Sunday he wrote features on a range of business subjects. One of these led to a commission to write a book, "Multimedia - Now and Down the Line", which was one of the first written on new media.

He became editor of the Network section of The Independent in 1995, sharing this job with business writing for the Sunday paper. It was this joint occupation that convinced him that there was a need for business, as opposed to technical, analysis of Internet issues. He left The Independent in March 1997 to work full time on Net Profit. He has columns in other publications, including the fortnightly Web Site Inspection in the Financial Times, and writes for a number of national broadsheets. In January 1999 the new media magazine Revolution named him one of the 100 "power players of the Internet" in the UK.
