NEWS FROM OUR SPEAKERS

MATTHEW PINSENT has achieved the remarkable feat of winning a gold medal in four consecutive Olympic Games. In one of the classic sporting moments of all time, he led the Great Britain coxless four to victory over the Canadian World Champions by only eight one hundredths of a second. The GB crew of Matthew, James Cracknell, ED COODE and Steve Williams competed for the lead with Canada throughout the 2000 metre race and with 200 to go the Canadians took the lead. However, in traditional fashion Matthew increased the stroke rate and the British boat clawed back the lead to win by inches. At the end neither crew knew who had won…until the roar of the British supporters confirmed victory.

RECENT EVENTS

DEBRA VEAL rowed the Atlantic alone when her husband, a 6 ft 5” experienced oarsman, left the boat on the eighth day after developing an uncontrollable fear of the ocean. Debra saw no reason to stop and rowed on, taking 112 days to become the youngest and only the third woman in the world to have rowed an ocean solo. Debra gave a motivational speech to Gillette, who said, “Debra proved to be a great success at the Gillette conference and her talk was viewed to be extremely motivational. I know a lot of people were strongly affected by her words. I will certainly not have any hesitation in recommending her for another event - she is both a pleasure to work with and inspirational to listen to.”

Britain’s funniest business guru, GEOFF BURCH spoke for Fujitsu on Customer Service. NEW BOOKS

What makes America so different from the rest of the world? This is the question posed by JOHN MICKLETHWAIT in his new book The Right Nation", co-authored with Adrian Wooldridge. The Right Nation is the definitive portrait of a United States that few outsiders understand: the nation that votes for George Bush, that supports the death penalty and gun rights, that believes in minimal government and long prison sentences, that pulled out of the Kyoto Protocol. America, argue John Micklethawait and Adrian Wooldridge, award-winning journalists at the Economist, has always been has always been a conservative country, but over the past fifty years it has built up a radical conservative movement unlike any other. The Right Nation drives to the heart of a question that is relevant to us all: Why is America – increasingly and often frighteningly – different, and what does this mean for the world.

In their ground-breaking new book, DANAH ZOHAR and Ian Marshall, the authors of The Quantum Self and Spiritual Intelligence, envisage two strikingly different scenarios for the future. The first is business as we know it today - all self-interest , short-term gain, isolationist thinking, with the bottom line as king. It is a business approach based on narrow assumptions about human nature and motivation. It is interested in shareholder value at the expense of even its own long-term future. It has become a monster set to consume our ever-diminishing resources and before long itself. The second envisages a business culture driven by fundamental values and a deep sense of purpose in which wealth is accumulated to generate a decent profit while acting to raise the common good. The emphasis is on `stakeholder value', where stakeholders include the human race, present and future, and the planet itself. These are the values of Spiritual Capital.
